SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Finger Lakes Community College women's soccer team opened up their 2023 campaign on the road at Onondaga Community College. The Lakers would drop the season opener against their Mid-State Athletic Conference opponent by a score of 5-0 on Wilbur Field at Lazer Stadium.
Despite the rocky start, the 2022 NJCAA Region III Runner-ups still have high expectations for the 2023 season with several key starters returning to the pitch, including the leading goal scorer from that 2022 squad Ella Lewis (Lyndonville, N.Y./ Lyndonville), midfielder Georgia Luft (Elba, N.Y./ Elba), and defender Riley Mason (Hilton, N.Y./ Hilton).
Freshmen goalkeeper Emily Neuenschwander (Hamilton, N.Y./ Hamilton) earned the start in goal against the Lazer and would make 20 saves in her debut.
The Lakers return to Canandaigua, N.Y. for a match with the Jamestown Community College Jayhawks next Wednesday, August 30th at 2 PM. The Lakers will look to pick up a win against the Jayhawks for a second straight season after coming out on top in last season's matchup, 3-0.
