Lakers Shine at Cardinal Classic
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. – The Finger Lakes Community College track and field teams traveled to Rochester, N.Y. Saturday morning for the Cardinal Classic hosted at St. John Fisher College.
On track with the trend of the season for both teams, the Lakers would earn 8 national qualifying times, followed by 10 Lakers earning National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region III regional qualifying marks.
After today's meet, student-athlete(s) Leah Lloyd has qualified for a team-high 5 national events, while teammate Ericka Moody comes in with 3 qualifying marks to round out the women's team. For the men's team, Giovanni Ventura has qualified for 3 events at nationals, while teammate John Zimmerman joins Ventura with 2 qualifying marks.
Men
National Qualifiers
Cameron Rynders would lead off the Lakers national qualifiers on the day. Rynders would earn a mark of 6.28m in the long jump, good for 7th place in the event.
Rynders would join teammates Hunter Zangerle, Tyqwan Coles, and Memphis Lohnes in the 4x100, earning a time of 45.38 and a 6th place finish.
Giovanni Ventura would follow Rynders, qualifying for nationals in the 800m, with a time of 2:02.89.
Regional Qualifiers
Rynders would add to his national qualifying time, earning a Region III qualifying mark in the 200m, placing 20th with a time of 24.05. A 4x800 team featuring student-athletes Giovanni Venutra, Kyle Green, John Zimmerman, and Hunter Zangerle would place 2nd in the men's 4x800 with a time of 8:50.04.
Jacob DiGiovanni would earn the regional qualifying mark in the 10,000m, earning a time of 39:46.55.
Women
National Qualifiers
Elizabeth Rose would earn a time of 2:37.88 in the 800m, meeting the national standard. Rose would join a 4x400 team consisting of teammates Ericka Moody, Leah Lloyd, and Chyra Patterson to claim a 6th place finish in 4:44.12.
Ericka Moody would qualify in the 200m, completing the race in 27.52.
Regional Qualifiers
Ericka Moody would add to a national qualifying mark, with a Region III mark in the long jump at 4.23m. Elizabeth Rose would follow behind Moody in the long jump, with a mark of 4.09m. Morgan Collazo would round out the Lakers with a qualifying mark in the javelin throw with a mark of 19.64m.
