Lakers Soar to New Heights at SUNY Brockport in Record-Breaking Performance

CORTLAND, N.Y. - The Finger Lakes Community College track and field team's recent trip to SUNY Brockport this past weekend was highlighted by several key performances that surpassed not only regional and national standards but also FLCC records.

Juliette Ventura highlighted the two-day Heptathlon, setting a new school record with a total score of 2880 points, eclipsing the previous FLCC record of 2739 set by Melinda Waag in 2019 at the NJCAA Division III National Championships. Throughout the event, she qualified for Nationals in the 100m hurdles with a time of 19.69 seconds, cleared 1.39m in the high jump, threw 8.18m in the shot put to meet the regional standard, and sprinted to a time of 30.51 seconds in the 200m, also qualifying regionally. Her exceptional performance continued over the last three events on day two as she leaped 4.67m in the long jump, threw 23.51m in the javelin, and completed the 800m in 2:59.90. 

Trinity Ortiz also made headlines once again by setting a new school record in the long jump, reaching a remarkable distance of 5.28m and securing 4th place. Ortiz surpasses her record of 5.21m, extending her lead in the record books once again. Additionally, she qualified nationally with a 200m dash time of 27.34 seconds and took 2nd place in the high jump with a leap of 1.48m. Classmate Grace Holmes achieved a personal best in the 400m, clocking in at 1:12.74, while Morgan Cheney competed in the 3K Steeplechase, finishing in 14:34.74. Phallon Rivera threw 22.85m in the discus, and Megan Calder recorded a personal best in the 1500m with a time of 5:48.71. 

On the men's side, Jason Hunt-McLean qualified regionally in the discus with a throw of 29.45m and set a personal record in the javelin at 30.07m. Justin Luna showcased his versatility, jumping 4.79m in the long jump, hurdling the 110m in 21.26 seconds, and completing the 400m hurdles in 1:14.69. Zachary Lester achieved a regional qualifying time in the 10K, finishing in 38:46.57. Lastly, Terreque Davis qualified regionally in the 100m with a time of 11.91 seconds and cleared 1.71m in the high jump. 

Next for the Lakers is a trip to the SUNY Cortland Regional and 10k this Friday, April 19th and Saturday, April 20th.
