Lakers go 1-2 at Jefferson Community College Invitational

The Finger Lakes Community College women's volleyball team went 1-2 at the Jefferson Community College Invitational. They lost the first two matches of the day to Corning (15-25, 17-25) and Jefferson (18-25, 25-21, 4-15), but were able to end the day with a win against Mohawk Valley (25-9, 25-20). The Lakers finished third in their pool and did not advance to the playoff round due to their pool play finish.

Ryenn Smith led the Lakers offense with 21 kills on the day. Smith contributed 5 kills against Corning, 12 kills against Jefferson, and 9 kills against Mohawk Valley. Jessie Blumenfeld contributed 7 assists against Corning, 17 assists against Jefferson, and 13 assists against Mohawk Valley. Christina Denniston had a solid defensive showing with a total of 25 digs on the day, 10 of those digs occured during the three set match against Jefferson.

The highlight of the tournament was against Mohawk Valley with the win being a solid team effort. In set 1 against Mohawk Valley the Lakers had an overall hitting percentage of .350, with only minimal errors occuring throughout the set and the match altogether.

"I was very pleased with the effort that we gave today. We lost two tough matches against Corning and Jefferson, where the girls battled until the end. It was great for us to end the day with a win and to gain momentum going into next week," said head coach Matt Barr.

The Lakers will host their first home game of the 2013 season on Wednesday, September 11th against Jefferson Community College at 6 p.m.
