Lakers Fall to Alfred State in Four

CANANDAIGUA, NY--The Finger Lakes volleyball team lost in four to Alfred State (15-25, 25-23, 21-25, 11-25). Sophomores Courtney Bradish (Camden, NY) and Christina Denniston (Newark, NY) were honored at the start of the match for their two year contributions to the Finger Lakes women's volleyball program.

Alfred started the match winning the opening point, and went on to build a 6-1 lead. Alfred relied on strong serving and a well balanced offensive attack to build a strong lead throughout the entire set. The Lakers would not get any closer as the Pioneers would continue on to win the first set 25-15.

The second set was an evenly matched set that saw a lot of back and forth points. The Lakers pulled off the win with a Ryenn Smith kill to win it 25-23. It was the first set that Alfred State has lost to a junior college team all season.

Alfred would start off the third set stretching the lead to 8-4. The Lakers would storm back to tie the match at 8. The set would continue to go back and forth with no team taking more than a two point lead. The Pioneers would prevail however taking the third set 25-21, and a 2-1 lead in the match.

Alfred State started out the fourth set strong and would extend an 11-3 lead all the way to 21-11. They continued on the win the set 25-11 and the match 3-1.

Ryenn Smith led attackers with 19 kills. Courtney Bradish contributed 12 kills and 15 digs for a double-double performance. Jessie Blumenfeld had 29 assists and 11 digs. Bridget Whitehair also contributed 10 digs on the night.

The Lakers will play the final POD of the regular season at Corning Community College on Saturday, October 19th. The Lakers will go up against Broome Community College, Tompkins Cortland Community College and SUNY Delhi.
