Lakers Walk to End Hunger

CANANDAIGUA -- The Finger Lakes Women's Volleyball team participated in the "Walk to End Hunger" last Sunday at the Canandaigua Middle School.  The walk support Canandaiuga's Gleaners Community Kitchen in their efforts to feed the hungry in the surrounding community.

Gleaners Community Kitchen is a non-profit organization dedicated to serving healthy meals, free of charge, to those in need, no questions asked, no one denied.  Due in great part to local grocery stores, restaurants, service organizations and individuals in the community, Gleaners Kitchen is able to serve over 70 meals each day and 18,000+ annually to those in need.

The Finger Lakes Community College Athletics Department supports its Student-Athletes participating in different community service projects throughout the year. Bethany Schlegel, the Assistant Athletic Director at Finger Lakes, said with regards to the event "It is the Athletic Department's mission to develop our Student-Athletes as people, as students and as athletes. We focus on moral and social character and having our athletes participate in community service opportunities contributes to that development.  It is always great to see our athletes giving back within the local community and the Gleaners Community Kitchen serves a great purpose within the local community".

In addition to the Volleyball team's participation in the walk on Sunday, the Student-Athlete Advisory Board ran a 50/50 raffle during the Men's Regional Basketball tournament to help raise funds for Gleaners Kitchen.  The Men's Baseball team also contributed a generous donation to Gleaners kitchen in support of their Walk to End Hunger.
