Lakers Earn Regional and Conference Win in Home Opener

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. - The #4 Finger Lakes Community College Lakers hosted the visiting Onondaga Community College Lazers for their home opener on the Putt Moore Court. The Lakers would come out on top in the Mid-State Athletic Conference and NJCAA Region III matchup, 3-0.

Freshman Payton Stoddard (Bloomfield, N.Y./ Bloomfield) helped facilitate the Lakers offensive attack with 38 assists. Stoddard was effective on defense with 5 digs in the match as well. Stoddard's defensive efforts were complimented by a 13-dig standout performance from freshman libero Michelina Williams (Fairport, N.Y./ Fairport).

The Lakers offensive attack was led by Kiane Wells (Webster, N.Y./ Webster Thomas) who finished with 11 kills on an effective .500 hitting percentage. Freshman Jordan Winton (Sherburne, N.Y./ Sherburne-Earlville) continued her strong start to the season, finishing with 9 kills in the match.

Teammates Brooke DeGroff (Castile, N.Y./ Letchworth) and Leah Williams (Olean, N.Y./ Olean) finished with 5 and 10 kills respectively. Freshman Bridget Miller (Seneca Falls, N.Y./ Mynderse) had a strong game with 5 kills, 2 aces, 4 digs, and a block assist in an overall performance.

The Lakers return to action this Sunday, September 3rd for a pair of matches against SUNY Adirondack at 1 PM, and Hudson Valley Community College at 3 PM on the Putt Moore Court. The Lakers will then embark on a five-match road trip before returning home on September 19th against Corning Community College.
