Women's Volleyball Sweeps Pair of Conference Opponents

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - The Finger Lakes Community College women's volleyball team traveled to SUNY Broome Community College to take on the Broome Hornets and Corning Community College Red Barons. The Lakers would earn a clean sweep over both of their Mid-State Athletic Conference opponents to improve to 12-1 this season.

Lakers vs. SUNY Broome Community College

The Lakers put on another dominant display against the Hornets with a sweeping victory on their home court. Freshman Payton Stoddard (Bloomfield, N.Y./ Bloomfield) showcased her versatility with 4 kills off 9 attempts, good for a .444 hitting percentage, and a team-leading 25 assists. Stoddard went on to add 3 service aces and 6 digs to her impressive stat line. Sophomore Brooke DeGroff (Castile, N.Y./ Letchworth) was a major contributor in the match, putting up 8 kills to lead the attack. DeGroff's all-around play was evident as she added 1 assist, 4 digs, and 2 block assists to her total.

Freshman Leah Williams (Olean, N.Y./ Olean) stood out with her efficiency, achieving 8 kills from 10 attempts, good for a .700 hitting percentage to go along with her block assist. Fellow classmate Kiane Wells (Webster, N.Y./ Webster Thomas) had a notable performance, hitting a .455 percentage and securing 5 kills. Wells would bolster the team's defense with a solo block and 2 block assists to her tally in the match. Freshman Michelina Williams (Fairport, N.Y./ Fairport), while registering 2 kills and 5 assists would make her presence felt on the defensive side of play, leading the team with 10 digs while chipping in at the service line with 2 aces. 

Freshman Bridget Miller (Seneca Falls, N.Y./ Mynderse) added depth to the Lakers' dynamic attack with 7 kills to go along with 3 digs and a block assist. Teammate Jordan Winton (Sherburne, N.Y./ Sherburne-Earlville) made her presence felt in 2 sets played, adding 2 kills and 2 blocks to her stat total to round out a strong overall performance for the team.

Lakers vs. Corning Community College

To round out the day, the Lakers added another dominant performance to their resume with a 3-0 sweep over the Red Barons. 

Sophomore Brooke DeGroff shined with 7 kills and 5 aces while remaining active on defense with 9 digs to round out her day. Teammate Bridget Miller contributed to the Lakers' attack with 8 kills while adding a service ace and 2 digs to her total. Freshman Leah Williams had another efficient outing, achieving 7 kills to go along with a block assist on defense. 

Freshman Kiane Wells was consistent, registering 5 kills and adding 2 digs to her performance. Teammate Michelina Williams played a crucial role on defense, leading the team with 10 digs. Sophomore Kierstin Comerford (Geneva, N.Y./ Geneva) stepped up in match two as a force to be reckoned with at the service line, delivering 4 aces. 

With the win, the Lakers move to 12-1 and look ahead to a pair of home matches on September 30th. The Lakers will host the Herkimer Generals for an 11 AM match followed by a 1 PM match with Mohawk Valley.
