Cara Bryant Memorial Tournament Champions

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Finger Lakes Community College Volleyball team finished out the Cara Bryant Tournament on Saturday. They played two more pool play games, and then a semi-final, and the final to win the tournament.

Match One

The Lakers started out their Saturday with a match against the Onondaga Community College Lazers. They did not have as great as a start they did the day before. While still playing hard to win it, the Lazers took down the Lakers 2-0. They beat the Lakers 25-22 both sets.

Game leaders for the Lakers were Rachel Simmons with 10 kills, Kady Pierce with 17 assists and one service ace, Blake Morrison with one service ace, and Megan Gass with 14 digs.

Match Two

The Lakers were down on their luck again for the second match of the day. They went down 2-0 against Northampton Community College. Staying in the sets the whole time, they lost 25-21 in the first set, and 25-19 in the second.

Game leaders for the Lakers were Simmons with nine kills, Pierce with 17 assists and one service ace, Linda Coleman with one service ace, Gass with eight digs, and Morrison and Alyssa Fox with one block.

Match Three

The Laker's third match of the day, was the start of the elimination rounds. This would be the semi-finals. The Lakers had a rematch against the Lazers. They made it a much tighter match this time around. It started off with the longest set they've played all season. They ended up falling, but not without a fight. They lost the first set 31-29. The second set was still just as much of a fight. The Lakers came out on top 26-24. The Final set was a battle to the finish, with the Lakers taking the match 15-13.

Game leaders for the Lakers were Simmons with 19 kills, Fox with 12 kills, Pierce with 29 assists and two service aces, and Gass with 31 digs.

Championship Match

The final match of the day for the Lakers was the Championship match. The Lakers were facing the SUNY Broome Community College Hornets for the second time this tournament. The Lakers started on top winning the first set 25-21. The Hornets gained some steam and took the second set 25-17. The Lakers wanted that championship, and got it winning 15-5. A 10 point lead!

The Laker's performance earned them not only a championship, but also a few team members winning extra awards. Simmons, Fox, and Gass all made the All-Tournament Team. Simmons, with such a dominating performance on the weekend, was awarded the Tournament MVP.

Game leaders for the final match for the Lakers were Simmons with 13 kills, Pierce with 24 assists, Morrison and Coleman with one service ace, and Gass with 25 digs.

 

The Lakers will play again at home on Thursday, October 11th. They will face the Genesee Community College Cougars at 6:00pm.
