Lakers Drop Pair of Games to Harford CC

By Jimmy Habecker

BEL AIR, MD. – The Finger Lakes CC baseball team lost a pair of games to Division 1 Harford CC on Tuesday 10-0 and 16-6. The Lakers now stand at 1-3 on the young season.

Finger Lakes fell behind early in game one and after doing so, were never able to climb back into the opener of the doubleheader. Joey Simmons supplied the lone hit. Freshman Max Fleig and Zachariah Lyman each threw a scoreless inning of relief for the Lakers.

In game two, Finger Lakes would jump out to an early 1-0 lead. Aaron Freida led off the nightcap by getting hit by a pitch. After getting plunked, he stole second, advanced to third on a balk, and then crossed the plate thanks to a Troy Loparco RBI double.

Finger Lakes, after going up 1-0 in the top half of the first inning, surrendered six unearned runs in the bottom half of the first. The score would remain 6-1 until the fifth. Hunter Hey and Freida would walk, and Simmons would single to load the bases. Hey would be forced in for the Lakers second run after Nicholas Petrantoni was hit between the numbers. Kenny Urbanik would then clear the bases with a double to deep left center field. His extra base hit would close Harford's lead to 6-5.

The Fighting Owls answered with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the fifth to widen the margin back to 9-5. Finger Lakes, in the sixth, would get a run back. Hey led off the inning with a walk. He would eventually find himself crossing home plate for the Lakers final run of the game. His run would find the scoreboard as the result of a double steal. Hey would steal third while Simmons, who was on first at the time, would grab second base simultaneously. A throw down would bring Hey in for the run.

Harford, after seeing its lead dissipate to 9-6, would seal the game in the bottom of the sixth with seven runs. Their group of runs would force the mercy rule at 16-6.

The Lakers return to the field today, as they will take on Hagerstown CC in an afternoon road doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1 pm.
