Baseball Splits with Tompkins Cortland
DRYDEN, NY -- The Finger Lakes Community College Baseball team split a doubleheader with Tompkins Cortland Community College on Sunday. Finger Lakes won the opening game 7-5, but lost Game 2 by the score of 5-4. The Lakers are now 17-18 on the season and are 12-11 in Region III play.
Kevin Carpentier scored on a Kenny Urbanik single in the second inning for the early 1-0 lead. The Panthers tied the game in the bottom of the inning and then took at 2-1 lead following the third. Finger Lakes would answer with a pair of runs in the fourth to take the lead right back. Dalton Murray led the inning off with a double. Following a Hunter Hey walk, Kenny Urbanik bunted them to second and third. A Matt Ashley single would bring home both runs for the 3-2 lead. The Lakers added to their lead in the fifth. With one out, Cameron Heasley singled and Kevin Carpentier doubled for Finger Lakes. Two runs would be brought home when Dalton Murray reached on an error and the third scored on another Panther error. Finger Lakes carried a 7-4 lead into the seventh. Kane Shaw came in for the close. He allowed an unearned run but closed the game out for his fourth save of the year and the Lakers won 7-5.
Eight of the nine Laker starters recorded a hit in the game. Kenny Urbanik had two hits and three RBIs for Finger Lakes. Ryan Landers earned his third win of the year on the mound for the Lakers.
The Lakers sent nine batters to the plate in the second inning of Game 2 and took an early 3-0 lead. Jay Perry and Hunter Hey led the inning off with walks. After moving up, Perry scored on a Kane Shaw sacrifice fly and Hey scored on a double by Danny D'Eletto. Ryan Juergens singled home D'Eletto for the early 3-0 lead. Tompkins Cortland answered with a run in the bottom of the inning, but the Lakers answered right back in the third. The inning once again started with a Jay Perry walk. He was bunted to second base and scored on a single by Kane Shaw to make it 4-1. The Panthers would score a run in each of the next three innings to tie the game at 4-4. That score remained until the bottom of the seventh. Tompkins Cortland used a leadoff walk to their advantage and scored the game-winning run on a walkoff sacrifice fly for the 5-4 victory.
Ryan Juergens had three hits for the Lakers. Kane Shaw added two hits, including a double. Shaw also stole a bag and drove in two runs.
Finger Lakes will play their final home game on Tuesday when they host Onondaga Community College. The Lakers and Lazers split their first doubleheader a week ago. First pitch from Canandaigua is set for 2pm.
