CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. - The Finger Lakes Community College hosted the Monroe Community College Tribunes for their final home game of the regular season. The two teams battled it out
Game one vs. Monroe
After a scoreless first inning, the Lakers jumped out an early 2-0 lead thanks to a home run over the left field wall by freshman Alex Ahlstrom (Dunkirk, N.Y./Dunkirk). Sophomore Jorge Oropeza III (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Athena) added to the Lakers run, doubling home teammate Kenny Murphy (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder).
The Tribunes would go on to narrow the gap in the score, adding a run in the third inning. However, the Lakers would answer in the same inning off an RBI single by Alex Ahlstrom and a sacrifice fly by Alex Wootton (Palmyra, N.Y./Palmyra Macedon) to make the score 4-1 in favor of the Lakers.
The Tribunes bats would come life as the team went on to add 2 runs in the fourth, and 3 runs in the fifth, and 2 runs in the seventh inning while holding the Lakers scoreless to take an 8-4 advantage.
The Lakers would attempt to mount a comeback in the seventh inning, scoring 2 runs, but would ultimately fall short by a final score of 8-6.
Freshman Paulie Goodness (Palmyra, N.Y./Palmyra-Macedon) led the Lakers with a 3-for-4 performance, followed by Alex Ahlstrom who finished with 2 hits and 2 RBIs.
Game two vs. Monroe
The Lakers were held scoreless through the first five innings of play, while the Tribunes tacked on a run in the first, second, and third innings. It wasn't until the sixth inning that a 2 RBI single off the bat of Lucas Sulimowicz (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Athena) brought the Lakers within striking distance. Sulimowicz would finish the game going 2-for-3 with an RBI and run scored.
The Lakers would take advantage of a Tribune passed ball to score the tying run at 3 all with 2 outs on the board. With bases loaded and 2 outs, freshman Alex Wootton used his batter eye to walk home the go ahead run, taking a 4-3 lead into the seventh inning.
Coming into the game in relief was sophomore Josh Ferris (North Chili, N.Y./Churchville-Chili) who helped complete a thrilling comeback victory, closing the door with 1 strikeout.
Sophomore Nicholas Franceschi (Geneva, N.Y./Geneva) earned the start, holding the Tribunes to 3 runs scored and striking out 5 batters over 6 1/3 innings pitched.
The Lakers cap off their season at home and will travel to Monroe Community College on Thursday, May 4th for a doubleheader with the Tribunes. The first pitch is slated for 1 PM on the Tribunes home turf.
