CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. – The Finger Lakes Community College baseball team continued its surge through Region III, overcoming early deficits in Thursday's doubleheader to defeat Genesee 10-7 and 6-5. The Lakers (22-10, 8-4) have now won 6 straight and boast an 11-2 record at home.
In game one, it was Markus Brehm (Wayland, N.Y./Wayland-Cohocton) who sparked the comeback effort. After the Cougars jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the fourth, Brehm ignited a 6-run answer in the bottom half of the inning with an inside-the-park, 3-run homer — capping what proved to be the turning point in the game that included RBIs from Christian Morrison (Macedon, N.Y./Palmyra-Macedon) and Brody Froman (Irondequoit, N.Y./West Irondequoit), as well as a run scored on a balk.
Brehm added an RBI double in the sixth to push the lead to 7-4, and Justin Angora (Henrietta, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta) followed with a bases-clearing triple to blow the game open at 10-4. Though Genesee rallied for 3 runs in the seventh, Caleb Wilson (Rochester, N.Y./Aquinas) closed the door to pick up the save, while Mason McClurg (Warsaw, N.Y./Warsaw) earned the win.
Game two wrapped up an emphatic effort on the day for the Lakers. Genesee built a 3-0 lead through four and a half innings, but the Lakers roared back with a five-run fifth. Brehm delivered again — this time with a 2-run homer — and Brennen Russo (Irondequoit, N.Y./Eastridge) followed with an RBI triple to tie the game, before Jack Carozzoni (Elmira, N.Y./Elmira) knocked in the go-ahead run to complete the rally.
The Cougars answered with a 2-run homer in the sixth to cut it to 6-5, but sophomore ace Ian Goodness (Palmyra, N.Y./Palmyra-Macedon) came in to record a four-out save, stranding the tying run in the seventh.
Brehm finished the doubleheader with 6 RBIs, 2 home runs, and a double, delivering a career day in a key Region III and MSAC matchup at home. The Lakers have a quick turnaround as they head to Auburn, N.Y., this afternoon to take on the Cayuga Spartans at Falcon Park; The Spartans sit at 23-9 and are winners of 4 straight games.
