Lakers Battle Cayuga in Tight Contest on Sophomore Night

By Logan Weingartner

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. - Tuesday night, the Finger Lakes Community College men's basketball team came up just short in a nail-biter with the Spartans of Cayuga Community College.

Anthony Torres (Geneva, N.Y./Geneva) had a high-volume shooting night, putting up a team-high 25 points with 6 rebounds. Torres sunk several clutch shots down the stretch, while teammate Bruce Wilder Jr. (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) poured in 18 points on 50% shooting. Brian Whitley (Geneva, N.Y./Geneva) crashed the glass effectively, grabbing 11 rebounds – marking his 5th game of the season with 10 or more boards. Both Tim Graziano (Hilton, N.Y/Hilton) and Joe Caito (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua Academy) were effective off the bench, adding 8 points apiece.

In a game that saw 14 ties and 6 lead changes, the Lakers were unable to come out on top. Defense was the emphasis of the game, as both teams shot just 36% from the field. Turnovers and missed rebounds proved costly for the Lakers, and the Spartans were able to capitalize.

The Lakers will be up against SUNY Broome Community College in their next matchup, which takes place on the Hornets' home court on Thursday, February 6th at 8 PM. The Lakers are 20-3 against Broome in the past 10 seasons and currently hold a 3-game win streak over them – winning 8 of the last 10.
