Jayhawks top Lakers in Penalty Kicks

CANANDAIGUA -- Jamestown finished all four of thier penalty attempts while the Lakers were stopped twice as the Jayhawks won Saturday in men's soccer action. The game was 0-0 through 110 minutes of play and was forced to the deciding penalty kicks.

Jamestown held pressure on the Lakers for most of the afternoon. Finger Lakes was aided however by Ryan Haines making his season debut. The sophomore as a steady rock for the Lakers defense and helped thwart any attack by Jamestown. James Ferro and Kyle Daly also stood out defensively. No one stood out as much as Brian Arcara, however. The freshman making his first collegiate start recorded 10 saves, 8 of which came in the second half. He has allowed only 1 goal on 20 shots to start the season.

Converted goalkeeper Michael Maynard provided a spark for the Lakers offense. Maynard always seemed to be around the ball when Finger Lakes was attacking, making runs and putting pressure on the Jayhawks. Also jumping up with Maynard was Corey Nash. The forward led the Lakers with 5 shots.

After 110 minutes were complete, they went to the shootout to decide the winner. Jamestown goalie Tyler Dykstra was the star of it as he stopped the first two attempts by Finger Lakes. Corey Nash would score on the third attempt, but it was too little, too late, as Jamestown converted on all of their attempts for the win.

Finger Lakes will return to action on Sunday facing off against the Saints of Mercyhurst North East. Mercyhurst topped Mohawk Valley on Saturday 2-1 in double overtime in the first game of the Finger Lakes Classic. Kickoff is scheduled for 3pm.
