Unfortunate Bounce Dooms Lakers

CANANDAIGUA -- Mercyhurst North East took advantage of a timely bounce to beat the Lakers on Sunday in the final game of the Finger Lakes Classic. Off a Mercyhurst corner kick, the ball caromed off a Finger Lakes player for the deciding own goal with 3 seconds left. Finger Lakes now stands at 0-3 on the young season. 

The Saints dictated the pace for most of the first half. They held pressure on the Lakers, but the defense was up to the task. Mercyhurst was able to get off 12 first half shots, but most were low percentage attempts and forced wide of the goal. Brian Acara was solid yet again for the Lakers in net recording five saves in the half, and seven total for the game. Finger Lakes made the most of their four shots in the half, but Logan Mears was there for the Saints to keep the match at 0-0 going into halftime.

Finger Lakes came out fast in the second half and put pressure on Mercyhurst. Freshman Corey Nash was leading the charge up front. He had a game-high three shots on goal for the Lakers. The deciding goal game late as Finger Lakes would conceed a corner with 20 seconds remaining. Saints backer Nick Plonski would swing the kick in from the right side of the goal. The ball would bounce around, go off a Lakers defender, and into the back of the net with three seconds remaining. 

The Lakers are back on the field this Wednesday, September 4 as the welcome Hudson Valley CC to the Finger Lakes campus. The game is scheduled to start at 4pm.
