Lakers Drop Season Opener

CANANDAIGUA -- The Finger Lakes Community College Men's Soccer team kicked off the 2014 season on Saturday, hosting Georgia Perimeter College. The Lakers lost to Georgia Perimeter, who are ranked 6th in the NJCAA Division I poll, by the score of 3-0.

The Lakers were able to withstand the attack of the Jaguars in the first half. Sophomore keeper Brian Arcara kept the Lakers in the game. He recorded five saves in the half. In total, Georgia Perimeter outshot Finger Lakes 11-0 in the half. However, thanks to Arcara, the teams went to halftime scoreless.

The Jaguars would get on the board early in the second half however. Reece Weldon would curve a ball around Arcara for the 1-0 lead in the 46th minute. Weldon would add two more goals, one in the 54th minute and the other in the 67th, to make it a 3-0 game. Weldon's final goal came off of a penalty kick. The Lakers offense developed a few chances in the second half. Corey Nash took the ball down the right side, beating the defender, and went near post. The Jaguars goalkeeper would extend out, dove, and tipped the ball to the side. Nash started another scoring attempt off of a free kick. Nash bent it towards the far post and found the head of a diving Ashley Waine. Once again though, the Georgia Perimeter keeper would get in the way of the ball to preserve the shutout. The Jaguars continued on to the 3-0 victory.

Arcara added five more saves in the second half, bringing his game total to 10. Along with Nash and Waine, Ange Soumbassis and Tom Callister also added shots on goal for the Lakers.

Finger Lakes will open Region III and Mid-State Athletic Conference play on Wednesday as they travel to Binghamton, NY to take on SUNY Broome. Kickoff with the Hornets is set for 4pm.
