Track and Field Shines at SUNY Cortland

CORTLAND, N.Y. - The FLCC track and field team had a solid showing at their second meet of the season hosted by SUNY Cortland. The Lakers continued to put their talents on display with several noteworthy performances over the course of the meet. 

Leah Lloyd (Palmyra, N.Y./ Palmyra Macedon) had a strong showing in the middle-distance events, posting a time of 2:37.47 in the 800m race. Lloyd went on to compete in the 1500m event, finishing with a time of 5:04.57, which qualified her for the NJCAA Division III national championship. Lloyd would round out her day in the field events with a javelin throw of 22.52m. Morgan Cheney (Prattsburgh, N.Y./ Prattsburgh) set a personal record of 6:08.88 in the 1500m race, while also showcasing her talents in the shot put with a throw of 6.49m, and the javelin throw with a distance of 17.43m.

DeShawn Owens posted a time of 12.15 seconds in the 100m race, with Jose Rivera (Waterloo, N.Y./ Waterloo) and Nasir Carr (Rochester, N.Y./ Greece Arcadia) also put up competitive times of 13.25 seconds and 13.52 seconds respectively in the 100m. Owens continued his performance in the 200m race, finishing with a time of 25.30 seconds. A 4x400m relay team consisting of John Zimmerman (Middlesex, N.Y./ Marcus Whitman), Memphis Lohnes (Rushville, N.Y./ Marcus Whitman), DeShawn Owens, and Michael Oberdorf (Newark, N.Y./ Newark), finished in fourth place with a time of 3:51.46. Zimmerman also had a solid performance in the 5000m race, finishing with a time of 17:26.76.

The Lakers field events were highlighted by student-athletes, Memphis Lohnes clearing a height of 3.70m in the pole vault, good for a 7th place spot, DeShawn Owens jumping a distance of 5.55m in the long jump, and Jaylen Wims throwing the shot put with a distance of 12.45m, earning a 7th place finish at the meet. Jason Hammond (Geneseo, N.Y./ Geneseo) joined his teammates earning a mark of 28.14m in the javelin throw.

The Lakers continue to impress in the early portion of the season and will look to continue their strong perfomance this Saturday, April 15th when they travel to SUNY Brockport for the SUNY Brockport Multi-Meet.
