Lakers Earn a Pair of First Place Finishes at University of Buffalo

BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Finger Lakes Community College men's and women's track and field teams had an impressive showing at the University of Buffalo Alumni Invitational on Saturday, April 22nd. In what was the Lakers final regular season meet of the season, the team would make their mark in a crowded playing field.

The women's team was led by Leah Lloyd (Macedon, N.Y./ Palmyra-Macedon), who took home 1st place in the 3000m steeplechase event with a time of 11:38.78. Additionally, Morgan Cheney (Prattsburgh, N.Y./ Prattsburgh) had a strong showing, winning the shot put with a throw of 6.93m.

On the men's side, Memphis Lohnes (Rushville, N.Y./ Marcus Whitman) took home 1st place in the pole vault with a height of 4.10m. The team also had a strong performance in the 100m and 200m events, with DeShawn Owens and Nasir Carr (Rochester, N.Y./ Greece Arcadia) leading the way. Owens finished 4th in the long jump with a jump of 6.00m, while Carr placed 6th in the 200m with a time of 26.99.

The men's 4x400m relay team of Owens, Carr, Lohnes, and Jose Rivera (Waterloo, N.Y./ Waterloo) finished 4th with a time of 47.35. Additionally, Jaylen Wims placed 9th in the shot put with a throw of 12.25m, and Jason Hammond (Geneseo, N.Y./ Geneseo) placed 4th in the javelin throw with a distance of 32.59m.

The Lakers will look to build on what was a strong showing and carry their performance into the NJCAA Region III championships, starting on April 29th and 30th with the Heptathalon, Decathalon, and 10K. The championships will then resume on May 6th for all other events.
