Lakers Cap off Regional Championships With Two Individual Titles

TROY, N.Y. - The Lakers men's track and field team delivered an impressive performance at the NJCAA Region III Championships held at Hudson Valley Community College. The team showcased their talents, earning several notable achievements over the course of the championships.

In the 100m, DeShawn Owens (Dansville, N.Y./Dansville) secured an impressive 4th place finish while Jose Rivera (Waterloo, N.Y./Waterloo) followed closely with a 6th place finish. Owen's built on an impressive performance, clinching at 3rd place finish in the 200m event, teammate Nasir Carr (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Arcadia) would earn a top 10 finish, securing 7th place in the event. Carr continued to to shine for the Lakers, earning a 4th place finish in the 400m.

In the long distance events, sophomore Jacob DiGiovanni (Waterloo, N.Y./Waterloo) showcased his skills and stamina, earning a 2nd place finish in the 5k, followed by a solid 4th place finish in the 10k. A 4x100 relay team consisting of DeShawn OwensJose RiveraNasir Carr, and Memphis Lohnes (Rushville, N.Y./Marcus Whitman) collectively secured a 4th place finish in the event.

The field events for the Lakers was the highlight of the championships. Memphis Lohnes soared to victory in the pole vault, claiming an impressive 1st place finish with a height of 3.90m. Teammate DeShawn Owens showcased his abilities in the long jump, securing a 6th place finish followed by teammate Nasir Carr who earned an 11th place finish in the event.

Freshman Jaylen Wims (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Sutherland) delivered an oustanding performance in the shot put, earning the Lakers their second NJCAA Region III title, while setting a personal record and FLCC men's track and field program record with a winning throw of 13.26m. In the discus throw, Wims continued to shine, securing an impressive 2nd place finish, with teammate Gavin Fernaays (Williamson, N.Y./Williamson) earning the 11th place spot.

Several Lakers were recognized for their performances including Nasir Carr and DeShawn Owens who were named 3rd-Team All-Region selections for their respective finishes in the 400m, and 200m events. Sophomore Memphis Lohnes was honored with 2nd-Team All-Region for his 2nd place finish in the Decathlon, while Jacob DiGiovanni secured 2nd-Team honors for his finish in the 5k. Furthermore, teammates Memphis Lohnes and Jaylen Wims were recognized as 1st-Team All-Region selections, with Lohnes earning the honor for his 1st place finish in the pole vault, followed by Wims record breaking 1st place finish in the shot put.

It was a successful weekend for FLCC men's track and field as they excelled at the NJCAA Region III Championships. The Lakers, however, still have unfinished business as they prepare for the NJCAA Division III National Championships this Thursday, May 11th through Saturday, May 13th at Mohawk Valley Community College in Utica, NY. Several student-athletes will look to claim top 10 finishes, while teammates Memphis Lohnes and Jaylen Wims will look to follow up their NJCAA Region III titles with NJCAA Divison III titles.
