Lakers Improve to 5-3 With Sweep Over Geneva College

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. - In a cross-association battle between NJCAA and NCAA schools, the NJCAA DIII Lakers would walk away victorious, earning a convincing 3-0 victory and sweeping the visiting Geneva College Golden Tornadoes in dominating fashion.

The Lakers were led by a standout performance from freshman Jonah Grbic (Victor, N.Y./ Victor) who racked up an impressive 15 kills on the night. Teammate Bryce Ceravolo (Canandaigua, N.Y./ Canandaigua) was instrumental in the Lakers victory, adding 11 assists and 3 aces, while teammate Ian Meeks (Victor, N.Y./ Victor) added 16 assists, 6 kills, and 2 blocks on the night.

Freshman Nick Ferris (Canandaigua, N.Y./ Canandaigua) would play two sets in the matchup, providing a spark with 5 kills and 1 block. Freshman outside hitter Daniel Seymour (Bellmore, N.Y./ John F. Kennedy) had a solid outing, recording 4 kills and 2 block assists on the defensive end, showcasing his ability to impact the game on both sides of the net.

Also for the Lakers, Samuel Guardado (San Salvador, El Salvador/ Josue Christian) added 1 kill and 3 digs, while AJ DeBalso (Canandaigua, N.Y./ Canandaigua) would cap off the night with 11 assists, 1 service ace, and 8 digs.

The Lakers came out of the gates firing in the first set, quickly establishing a 9-2 lead and forcing a timeout from the Golden Tornadoes. Even after the timeout, the Lakers continued to dominate and extended their lead to a commanding 13-3. While the Golden Tornadoes made a late push, it wasn't enough to overcome the Lakers early lead, resulting in a 25-16 win for Finger Lakes in set one.

Set two saw a similar start for the Lakers, who jumped out to a 10-2 lead and never looked back, securing a 25-17 victory. The final set of the night proved to be a challenge for the Lakers as the Golden Tornadoes gained an early 7-5 advantage. The Lakers rallied to tie it up 7-7 before going on a 6-2 run to take a 13-9 lead and force Geneva College to call a timeout. Despite a strong effort from the Golden Tornadoes, the Lakers ultimately would complete the 3-0 sweep.

The Lakers are back on the Putt Moore Court on March 3rd for a doubleheader matchup with Union County Community College at 6 PM, followed by a match with the Chaparrals of the College of DuPage at 8 PM.
