CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. - The Finger Lakes Community College men's volleyball team kicked off the first day of the annual FLCC Invite, hosting Roxbury Community College, Monroe University - Bronx and Nassau Community College. The Lakers finished with victories over RCC and Monroe, but dropped a closely-contested match to NCC.
The Lakers opened up with a strong win over Roxbury. Despite dropping the first set, they remained resilient and took the next 3 to claim the victory. Jack Donovan (Oswego, N.Y./.Oswego) led the way with a team-high 17 kills, while Evan Lukasiewicz (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) tailed with 13 of his own. Bryce Nickson (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) ushered the offense with 30 assists and also added in 6 kills, 9 digs and 3 service aces to round out his point total of 9.5. Both Grant Walker (Boston, N.Y./Eden) and Lukasiewicz were forces on the defensive end, with 10 and 8 digs respectively.
The Lakers stayed on course in their second contest as they picked up a triumphant win over Monroe. Through a balanced team effort, they generated both offensive and defensive momentum to pick up their 3rd shutout victory of the season. Evan Lukasiewicz had a strong outing on both offense and defense, putting up a team-high 8 kills along with 6 digs. Aaron Hennessy (Geneva, N.Y./Geneva) chipped in 6 kills on 12 attempts, and was a force at the net with 3 block assists. Cole Thomas (Fayetteville, N.Y./Chittenago) aided the offense with a team-high 14 assists and was efficient from the service line with 4 aces, while Grant Walker engineered the defense with a team-high 11 digs.
The Lakers dropped a close one to Nassau in their last match. Despite going up 2-0 early in the contest, the Lakers struggled to stay on pace, ultimately losing to the Lions in 5 sets. Evan Lukasiewicz once again led the offensive charge, racking up a team-high 17 kills. Lukasiewicz also made an impact on defense with 10 digs, while Bryce Nickson and Grant Walker contributed in that same department with 11 and 9 digs respectively. Power-hitters Jack Donovan and Aaron Hennessy both made their presence felt as they combined for 19 kills, while Dominick Alvardo (York, P.A./Northeastern) had an efficient outing with 7 kills on 14 attempts along with 4 digs and 3 block assists.
The Lakers currently stand at 2-1 in the invite, and will resume action tomorrow for another tripleheader on the second and last day of the event. They will take on Nassau in their first match at 10 AM, followed by faceoffs with Monroe and Roxbury.
