Finger Lakes Splits with College of Southern Maryland

MYRTLE BEACH, SC -- The Finger Lakes Softball team split with the College of Southern Maryland on Thursday in Myrtle Beach. The Lakers took the first game 4-2, but lost in the second 17-9. Finger Lakes is now 2-4 on the season.

The Lakers would fall behind early to Southern Maryland, but fight back in Game 1. They trailed 2-0 going into the bottom of the third inning. Finger Lakes would push one run across to get on the scoreboard in that frame. They would then tie the game in the fifth inning and score two runs in the sixth to give them the 4-2 lead and victory.

Rachel Mertens had the complete game in the circle. She allowed only two hits and struck out seven for her second win of the season. The Lakers made the most out of their four hits. Katie Plummer had a two-run single and Courtney Bradish had a triple for Finger Lakes.

Both teams offenses would come alive in Game 2. Finger Lakes pounded out 13 hits and score 9 runs. It would not be enough though. Southern Maryland would score in every inning but one and end the game early due to the mercy rule, winning 17-9.

Rachel Mertens went 3-4 with four RBIs and a triple for Finger Lakes. Kelly Kier had a two-run double and Jennifer Marshall had a pair of hits. Kelsey Snyder hit her first career home run for Finger Lakes as well.

The Lakers will finish their spring trip on Friday as they face regional foe Mohawk Valley at 9:30am. That game will be followed by one with Division II Lackawanna College at 11:30am.
