CORNING, N.Y. – It was a tale of two games Tuesday afternoon as Finger Lakes Community College split a home doubleheader with Corning, bouncing back from a 14-6 loss in game one to claim a thrilling 10-9 win in game two — the Lakers' first victory over the Red Barons in over a decade.
After a quiet start to game one, Finger Lakes showed late life with a 6-run fifth inning. Lauren Pilon (Kendall, N.Y./Kendall) roped a 2-RBI double, Anna Kurtzhalts (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island) added an RBI single, and Cameron Crawford (Ontario, N.Y./Wayne) and Brazen Beckwith (Geneva, N.Y./Geneva) each chipped in extra-base hits. However, 10 unanswered runs in the third and fourth innings allowed the Red Barons to pull away and take the opener, 14-6.
Game two brought a resilient response from the Lakers. After trailing 7-1 through two and a half innings, Finger Lakes steadily clawed back, posting 2 runs in the third, 3 in the fourth, and 4 more in the fifth. Corning pushed across 1 run in both the fourth and fifth innings, but Madison Anderson held firm over the final two frames to secure the complete game win, 10-9.
Anna Kurtzhalts led the offense with 3 hits, including 2 doubles and 2 RBIs, while Brazen Beckwith added a pair of hits and drove in 3. Ella Upchurch continued her productive stretch with 2 more RBIs, and Jackie Neureuter chipped in an RBI as the Lakers broke a decade-long drought against the Red Barons.
The Lakers move to 8-12 (1-3) on the season and will travel to SUNY Adirondack for their next game on Saturday, April 26th, with first pitch scheduled at 1 PM. The Lakers will then return home for a doubleheader with the Onondaga Lazers on Sunday, April 27th, starting at 1 PM.
