Softball Goes 1-3 in Weekend Slate

By Logan Weingartner

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. - The Finger Lakes Community College softball team went 1-3 over their weekend slate, as they split a high-scoring doubleheader versus SUNY Adirondack on Saturday, but fell to Onondaga CC twice on Sunday.

The Lakers suffered an 18-7 setback in game one against the Timberwolves of Adirondack on Saturday. Devon Dean (Phelps, N.Y./Midlakes) recorded three RBIs – her second straight game with that mark – while Jenna Tyczynski (Westmoreland, N.Y./Westmoreland)Cameron Crawford (Ontario, N.Y./Wayne) and Brazen Beckwith (Geneva, N.Y./Geneva) each tacked on an RBI of their own. Madison Anderson (Ashville, N.Y./Chautauqua Lake) pitched a complete game, but was dealt a tough deck of hitters.

Fortunately for the Lakers, they were able to bounce back in game two to record a 12-4 victory. The team received contributions from up and down the lineup, but it was Anna Kurtzhalts (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island) and Brazen Beckwith who stood out with 3 RBIs apiece, which included a deep homerun from Beckwith. Emma Johnson (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) and Ella Upchurch (Palmyra, N.Y./Palmyra-Macedon) furthered the offensive onslaught with an RBI each, while Cameron Crawford showcased her dynamic talent with a complete game on the mound as well as an RBI. Anna Kurtzhalts snatched her 19th base of the season during the contest, which helped her to become the new single season steals record holder for the program —  previously set by Jeri Baker in 2012.

The Lakers were unable to emerge victorious in game one against Onondaga on Sunday, as they suffered a 9-1 defeat. The Lazers surged to an early 5-0 lead, and it wasn't until the sixth inning when Brazen Beckwith came through with a sac-fly RBI to give the Lakers their first and only score of the game. The Lazers poured on three runs in the inning thereafter to cap off a 9-1 victory. Madison Anderson earned the start on the mound and delivered four strikeouts, while Cameron Crawford appeared for the final inning and dealt a strikeout.

Game two began in the Lakers favor, as they jumped out to an early 3-0 lead. The Lazers quickly stormed back, though, and found themselves up 5-3 after five innings. Jenna Tyczynski cut the deficit to just one in the sixth with a RBI single, but the Lazers built upon their offensive momentum in the latter half of the inning as they threw on 3 more runs to ultimately clinch an 8-4 victory. Pitcher Madison Anderson put up an efficient performance with 4 strikeouts in her second and last complete game of the weekend.

The Lakers hit the road for their next game, when they take on Erie CC in a doubleheader set for Tuesday, April 29th at 3 & 5 PM.
