Lakers Advance to Regional Quarterfinals with Gritty Win Over TC3
By Logan Weingartner
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. - The #7 Finger Lakes Community College women's basketball team opened up the postseason strongly on Tuesday, as they picked up a gritty win over #10 TC3 in the NJCAA Region III Sub-Regional Round.
Jazzmyn Lewis (Waterloo, N.Y./Waterloo) was a key part of the victory as she notched a double-double with 22 points and 12 rebounds. Lewis came up clutch at the charity stripe with 9/15 free throws and was also a force on defense with 7 steals and 2 blocks. Dalayla Alexander (Ellicottville, N.Y./Ellicottville) dropped 15 points along with 6 rebounds to round out an efficient performance, and Kierra Shaugnessy (Canastota, N.Y./Canastota) imposed her physical style of play with 12 rebounds. Both Jade Roussell (Dundee, N.Y./Dundee) and Ella Robinson (Hallstead, P.A./Blue Ridge) put on efficient performances with 8 and 7 points respectively, while also combining for 9 rebounds.
The Lakers were down 31-28 after 20 minutes, but stormed into the 2nd-half to disrupt the Panthers momentum. Strong defense forced the Panthers' into shooting a mere 32% from the field along with 19 turnovers. Thanks to a strong overall performance, the Lakers were able to emerge victorious, 56-52, picking up their first postseason win since 2018 when the Lakers were ranked #1 in Region III.
They will travel to Watertown, N.Y., for a quarterfinal round matchup against #2 Jefferson Community College. The Lakers lost 71-35 to the Cannoneers back in January, but will be looking to flip the script and come out with a victory to advance to the semifinals.
