CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. - The Finger Lakes Community College women's soccer team battled their way to a win on Saturday afternoon, taking down the Panthers of Tompkins Cortland Community College in a close contest. The 2-1 victory comes at home, and marks the first win of the season for the Lakers.
Defense was the name of the game in the first half, as both squads were unable to find the back of the net through the first 45 minutes of play. Lily Morse (Canandaigua, N.Y./Marcus Whitman), Laura Lopez (Bogota, Colombia/Colombia Co.), and Nya Sherman (Victor, N.Y./Victor) all took their chances, but to no avail. The score would be knotted up at zero all the way until the 46' mark, when Brynn Westlake (Bloomfield, N.Y./Bloomfield) hit the jackpot – putting the Lakers up 1-0. The fun for Westlake didn't end there, though, as she propelled the Lakers to a two goal lead at 55' off a set piece, capping off an excellent outing for the freshman.
The lone Panther goal came at the 77' mark, as Cassie Doane was able to slip one by off of a pass from Emma Lobdell, making it 2-1 in favor of the Lakers. Standout keeper Hannah Cowan (Austin, T.X./Dripping Springs) fended off every shot that came her way afterwards, making her presence in the net felt. Cowan was a critical piece to the Finger Lakes victory, as she faced eight shots and saved seven of them over 90 total minutes of action.
The Lakers will be looking to add another win to the books next weekend, as they take on SUNY Niagara on Sunday, September 22nd, at 1 PM on the FLCC multi-use turf.
