CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. - The Finger Lakes Community College women's soccer team hosted the SUNY Niagara Thunderwolves on Sunday, September 22nd in a Region III matchup at the FLCC Multi-use Turf Facility. The Lakers, who are coming off their first win of the season, were faced with a tough challenge against a Thunderwolves squad vying for their second win of the season after defeating the TC3 Panthers, 2-1, the same result in the Lakers matchup with the Panthers.
SUNY Niagara started out strong, outshooting the Lakers 11-4 in the first half and netting the first goal of the match at the 24' mark. Despite some early opportunities in the second half for the Lakers, the Thunderwolves would strike again at the 53' mark to grow their advantage to 2-0. Thunderwolves forward Rylee VanNostrand would grow the Thunderwolves advantage to 3-0 at the 65' mark, capping off a hat trick for the sophomore, before scoring her fourth of the match at the 75' mark.
VanNostrand would add an assist to her tally at the 85' mark off a corner kick as Savannah Horvath would net the Thunderwolves fifth goal of the match. For the Lakers, sophomore Lauren Bluett (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua) earned the start in goal and would finish 90' of play with 8 saves. Classmates Brynn Westlake (Bloomfield, N.Y./Bloomfield) and Nya Sherman (Victor, N.Y./Victor) would have two shots on goal apiece, but couldn't convert.
The Lakers will return home for their next match on Saturday, September 28th as they host the Hudson Valley Community College Vikings at 3 PM. The match will mark Lakers Supporting Lakers Day, organized by the FLCC Athletics Student Athlete Advisory Committee.
