Women's Volleyball Nets Pair of Wins to Open 2021

GARDEN CITY — The Finger Lakes Community College women's volleyball team traveled downstate for a pair of matches against Nassau Community College Saturday, and the Lakers emerged with a pair of victories to kick off the 2021 season.

In the first match, FLCC took the first two sets by scores of 25-23 and 25-20. Nassau CC evened the match by taking the next two sets, 25-15 and 25-21, before the Lakers won the match by a 15-9 score.

FLCC (2-0) then defeated Nassau CC (0-2) by scores of 25-19, 25-16, and 25-21 to complete the sweep.

In the opener, the Lakers were tied at nine in the decisive fifth set until freshman Caitlynne Marczyk (Hemlock, N.Y./Livonia) entered the match and proceeded to serve up six straight points to clinch the win. Sophomore Brandy Morrison (Macedon, N.Y./Palmyra-Macedon) recorded 17 kills and six digs, and freshman Oona O'Brien (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua) added 11 kills, 12 digs and 2 aces in the win.

Freshman Kayla Fetcie (Victor, N.Y./Victor) handed out 28 assists to go with 10 digs, and classmate Emma Sipos (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua) totaled 17 digs with 6 kills and 2 aces for FLCC.

The Lakers got 13 kills and nine digs from Morrison in the second match, while Oona O'Brien added 10 digs with seven kills, Sipos recorded 13 digs with four kills, Fetcie added 23 assists and four digs, and freshman Emer O'Brien (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua) had 13 digs in the win.

The Lakers travel to play Jefferson Community College on Sept. 7 before hosting Cayuga Community College on Sept. 9 in the home opener.
