Lakers Head to Region III Finals

SANBORN, N.Y. – The Finger Lakes Community College Women's Volleyball team competed in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), Region III, Division III playoffs on Saturday, oct. 30thIn the Lakers first match, they went up against the Timberwolves of SUNY Adirondack at Niagara County Community College who hosted the event. The Lakers came away with a 3-0 victory, winning 25-20, 25-16 and 25-13. 

Sophomore Brandy Morrison (Macedon, N.Y./ Palmyra-Macedon) helped lead the Lakers, adding 17 kills and 3 digs. Freshman Jenna Wallace (Baldwinsville, N.Y./ Baldwinsville) helped set up her teammates adding 5 digs, 3 aces and 34 aces in the match.

Freshman Oona O'Brien (Canandaigua, N.Y./ Canandaigua) was a big contributor in the Lakers attack, adding 13 kills and 5 digs. Freshman Emma Sipos (Canandaigua, N.Y./ Canandaigua) played an important role, adding 7 kills, 13 digs and 1 ace.

In the Lakers second match, the team went up against the Hornets of SUNY Broome Community College. The Lakers fell in their second match, 20-25, 19-25, 16-25. 

Freshman Emma Sipos led the Lakers in their match, adding 9 kills and 10 digs, while Oona O'Brien added 6 kills and 12 digs.

Sophomore Brandy Morrison was a big contributor for the Lakers, adding 9 kills, 5 digs and 3 block assists. Freshman Jenna Wallace setup her teammate with 7 digs, 16 assists and 1 block assist. Freshman Emer O'Brien (Canandaigua, N.Y./ Canandaigua) added 14 digs to round out the Lakers attack.

In a must-win, final match, the Lakers were challenged with a match against the Cannoneers of Jefferson Community College, who early in the season, the Lakers fell to 3-2. The Lakers willed themselves to victory, coming away with a 2-1 decisive victory. The won 25-21, 25-22 and fell in the last set 26-28.

Sophomore Brandy Morrison was dominate in the match, adding 19 kills and 7 assists while Oona O'Brien added 7 kills, 12 digs, 1 ace and 2 block assists. Freshman Kayla Fetcie (Victor, N.Y./ Victor) played an important role adding 2 kills, 2 digs, 3 aces, 1 assist and 1 block solo. Freshman Emma Sipos added 2 kills, 12 digs, 1 ace and 2 block assists.

With the win, the Lakers earn a spot in the NJCAA, Region III, Division III, Regional Finals where they will take on the Raiders of Fulton-Montgomery Community College on Oct. 31st at 11 A.M. With a win, the Lakers would earn a bid into the NJCAA National Volleyball Tournament.
