Volleyball Battles on the Road in Season Opener
Elyria, O.H. – The Lakers women's volleyball team traveled to Lorain County Community College on Wednesday, August 24th for a 6 pm matchup with the Commodores. The Commodores were one of four teams to earn an honorable mention in the latest NJCAA Division III national rankings.
The Commodores opened up with a 25-16 win in the first set, followed by a closer second set, where the Commodores would come out on top 25-19. Lorain County would take over in the third set, winning 25-12.
Brooke DeGroff (Castile, N.Y./ Letchworth) led the way with 11 points; adding 10 kills, 1 ace, and 4 digs. Sophomore Meghan Johnson (Phelps, N.Y./ Newark) would follow with 4 points, with 4 kills and 7 digs. Freshman Kierstin Comerford (Geneva, N.Y./ Geneva) added 3 aces, 1 dig, and a block assist in 3 sets played. Teammate Sage Barnedo (Silver Springs, M.D./ Springbrook) added a spark to the Lakers' attack with 15 assists, 2 aces, 11 digs, and 1 kill on the night. Freshman Adriana Botello (Holley, N.Y./ Holley) would finish the night with 2 assists and 6 digs.
In three sets, Freshman Olivia Sheehan (Rochester, N.Y./ West Irondequoit) would tally 2 assists and 10 digs. Freshman Megan Sanford (Savona, N.Y./ Campbell-Savona) would follow with 2 kills, while teammate Kaidyn VanDelinder would add 2 kills to her tally as well. Sophomore Kayla Fetcie (Victor, N.Y./ Victor) finished with 3 digs and a block assist in the matchup.
The #7 Lakers will look to shake off their loss to the Commodores when they open up on Friday, August 26th with a doubleheader matchup against fellow nationally ranked opponents #4 College of DuPage at 3 pm, followed by a 7 pm matchup with #8 Harper College.
