Volleyball Picks up First Win of the Season

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Women's volleyball traveled to Syracuse, N.Y. for a National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region III matchup with the Lazers on Onondaga Community College. The game served as the home opener, and season opener for the Lazers, while the Lakers entered the contest having played 5 matches prior to the two teams meeting. The Lakers experience at the College of DuPage Invitational would go on display, with the Lakers taking the game, 3 sets to none. The Lakers would take set 1, 25-20, set 2, 25-12, before closing out the match in set 3, 25-18.

Freshman student-athlete Sage Barnedo (Silver Springs, M.D./ Springbrook) and Olivia Sheehan (Rochester, N.Y./ West Irondequoit) would shine in the matchup. Barnedo would accumulate 1 kill, 30 assists, 3 aces, and 4 digs on the day, while Sheehan would add 20 digs and an ace to her tally.

Freshman Brooke DeGroff (Castille, N.Y./ Letchworth) would continue her consistent play on the attack with 12 kills, to go along with 2 aces and 6 digs in the regional matchup. Sophomore Meghan Johnson (Newark, N.Y./ Newark) added 4 kills, 2 aces, and 12 digs to her tally; good for 7 points. Fellow Sophomore Kayla Fetcie (Victor, N.Y./ Victor) would follow with 6 kills, 2 aces, and 2 digs for 8 points on the night.

Freshman Megan Sanford (Savona, N.Y./ Campbell-Savona) and Kierstin Comerford (Geneva, N.Y./ Geneva) would each play all three sets of the matchup. Sanford accumulated 6 points on the night with 5 kills and 2 block assists, while Commerford would add in 2 aces on the night. Freshman Kaidyn VanDelinder would wrap up the performance for the Lakers, tallying 3 kills and 1 dig.

After picking up their first win of the season in regional play, the Lakers will look to take their momentum into the weekend on Saturday, September 3rd when they will travel to SUNY Jefferson for the Jefferson Invitational. The Lakers will find themselves matched up against the Fulton-Montgomery Community College Raiders, Monroe Community College Tribunes, and the Mohawk Valley Community College Hawks.

The Lakers will find themselves home for the first time of the season next Tuesday, September 6th where the Lakers will face off against the SUNY Jefferson Cannoneers on the Putt Moore Court at FLCC.
