Lakers Roll to 9th Straight Victory

WATERTOWN, N.Y. - The Lakers women's volleyball team traveled to Jefferson Community College Saturday morning for the Jefferson POD where the Lakers would take on the Cayuga CC Spartans, Onondaga CC Lazers, and the Jefferson CC Cannoneers. 

Lakers vs. Onondaga CC 

Lakers Sophomore captain Meghan Johnson (Phelps, N.Y./ Newark) helped lead the Lakers in the close game, picking up 11.5 points with an impressive 10 kills, 1 ace, 25 digs, and 1 block assist. Freshman teammate Adrianna Botello (Holley, N.Y./ Holley) followed with 9 points off from 6 kills, 11 assists, 3 aces, and 12 digs. 

Sophomore middle hitter Brooke DeGroff (Castile, N.Y./ Letchworth) picked up 9 points with 8 kills, 1 ace, and 18 digs. Fellow teammate Kayla Fetcie (Victor, N.Y./ Victor) earned 8.5 points with 7 kills, 1 ace, and 1 block assist. 

Lakers vs. Cayuga CC 

The Lakers followed up their close matchup with the Lazers with a dominant victory over the Spartans, taking sets 1-3, 25-11, 25-4, and 25-10.  

Freshman Sage Barnedo (Silver Springs, M.D./ Springbrook) took the opportunity to help seal a victory for her teammates. Barnedo and Freshman teammate Brooke DeGroff combined for 16 points in the match. 

Barnedo added 3 assists, 8 aces, and 4 digs to her tally, while DeGroff would pick up 4 kills and 4 aces. Freshman Olivia Sheehan (Irondequoit, N.Y./ Irondequoit) played three sets, picking up 4 aces and 12 digs. Sophomores Kayla Fetcie and Meghan Johnson combined for 11 points; Fetcie would contribute 6 kills, while Johnson would add 4 kills, 1 ace, and 5 digs. 

Lakers vs. Jefferson CC 

After defeating #9 Jefferson Community College on Tuesday, September 6th in a 3-0 sweep, the Cannoneers saw their national ranking drop to #11. The team would find themselves in a rematch with the Cannoneers, who looked to defend their national ranking. The Lakers, however, would make a statement, defeating the Cannoneers in a 3-0 sweep. 

Freshman Brooke DeGroff took the opportunity to help guide the team to victory with a dominant 13 points performance. DeGroff tallied 10 kills, 1 ace, 13 digs, 1 block solo, and 2 block assists. Teammate Meghan Johnson followed her performance with an impressive 5 kills, 1 assist, 1 ace, and 17 digs.  

Adrianna Botello would add 4 kills, 7 assists, and 10 digs, while Sage Barnedo set her teammates up with 16 assists, to go along with 2 kills, 2 aces, and 5 digs. Kaidyn VanDelinder (Gananda, N.Y./ Gananda) would add 3 points with 2 kills, 1 assist, and 2 block assists. Teammate Kierstin Comerford (Geneva, N.Y./ Geneva) would play all three sets, adding 2 aces to her tally. 

The Lakers conclude an impressive run at the Jefferson Community College POD that ultimately results in the Lakers earning their 9th-straight win. The team will look to continue that streak on the road with a matchup with the Corning Community College Red Barons on September 20th at 6 PM.
