Women's Volleyball Sweeps at GCC POD

BATAVIA, N.Y. - Women's volleyball completed a sweep at the Genesee Community College POD this past Saturday, October 1st, highlighted by an upset victory over #2 ranked Fulton-Montgomery Community College in NJCAA Region III.

Lakers vs. Herkimer College

Freshman Brooke DeGroff (Castile, N.Y./ Letchworth) showed up for the Lakers in a big way against the Generals. The Freshman middle hitter finished with 19 points with 13 kills, 1 assist, 6 aces, and 4 digs. Sophomore Meghan Johnson (Phelps, N.Y./ Newark) joined DeGroff on the attack, adding 10 kills to go along with 1 assist, 3 aces, and 7 digs.

Freshman libero Olivia Sheehan (Irondequoit, N.Y./ West Irondequoit) picked up the team on defense, adding 11 digs to go with 5 aces for 5 points in the match. Freshman Sage Barnedo (Silver Springs, M.D./ Springbrook) followed on the defensive end with 6 digs herself to go along with 30 assists, 2 aces, and 2 kills. Teammate Kaidyn VanDelinder (Gananda, N.Y./ Gananda) finished with 5 kills and 1 block solo.

Lakers vs. Mohawk Valley

The Lakers earned the win by committee against the Hawks, with 9 student-athletes registering points.

Brooke DeGroff continued the attack on offense in game 2 of the day, adding 9 kills along with 2 aces and 4 digs. Sophomore Meghan Johnson added 8 kills, 1 ace, and 5 digs in 3 sets played.

Sophomore Kayla Fetcie (Victor, N.Y./ Victor) put together a strong game 2 with 6 kills, teammate Kaidyn VanDelinder joined, picking up the offense and defense with 4 kills and 1 block assist. Freshman Sage Barnedo continued to set her teammates up, adding 26 assists to go along with a team-high 9 aces and 8 digs.

The Lakers saw contributions from Adriana Botello (Holley, N.Y./ Holley) with 2 aces and 1 dig, Lily Ayotte (Sodus, N.Y./ Sodus) with 1 kill and 1 block assist, and Olivia Sheehan who finished with 1 assist, 1 ace, and 3 digs.

Lakers vs. Fulton-Montgomery

The Lakers capped off the day with an upset victory over the #2 Raiders in NJCAA Region III, defeating the team in 3 sets to 1. In the first set, down 14-6, the team would battle back to steal the set 25-23, shifting the momentum of the match.

teammates Brooke DeGroff and Meghan Johnson put the team on their backs, combining for 43 points in the match. DeGroff finished the match with a game-high 25 kills, the 4th-most in a single game for a Laker. DeGroff added 2 aces, 13 digs, and 2 block assists in the matchup as well. Johnson continued her hot streak on offense, adding 14 kills, 1 ace, and 14 digs.

Freshman Sage Barnedo finished with a game-high 42 assists to go along with 5 aces, 10 digs, and 1 block assist. Teammate Kaidyn VanDelinder picked up the team as a two-way player, adding 5 kills and 2 block assists in 4 sets played.

The Lakers look to continue a strong stretch in which they have won 18 of their last 20 games. The team will put that to the test this Wednesday, October 5th when they travel to Tompkins Cortland Community College for a 7 PM matchup with their regional opponent.
