Strong Defense Thwarts Hornets Attack

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. - The Finger Lakes Community College women's volleyball team improved to 23-8 on the regular season after defeating the Broome Community College Hornets 3-0 Tuesday night.

Freshman Kaidyn VanDelinder (Gananda, N.Y./ Gananada) helped lead the Lakers on defense, with 5 blocks and 2 block assists. VanDelinder's 5 blocks are the 5th-most in a game in Lakers women's volleyball history. VanDelinder added 4 kills on the attack to finish with 10 points on the night. Sophomore Meghan Johnson (Phelps, N.Y./ Newark) led the team with 12 kills on the night to go along with 9 digs; good for 12 points. 

Freshman Brooke DeGroff (Castile, N.Y./ Letchworth) added 11.5 points in the match with 9 kills, 2 aces, 5 digs, and 1 block assist. Sophomore Kayla Fetcie (Victor, N.Y./ Victor) played all three sets, adding 2 kills, 2 aces, 2 digs, and 1 block assist.

Freshman libero Olivia Sheehan (Irondequoit, N.Y./ West Irondequoit) made several strong plays on defense, finishing with 14 digs along with 2 aces. Teammate Sage Barnedo (Silver Springs, M.D./ Springbrook) joined her teammates with some strong defensive plays herself. Barnedo added 2 block assists to go along with her 21 assists and 4 digs. 

Freshman Adriana Botello (Holley, N.Y./ Holley) finished with 5 assists and 7 digs, Sophomore Emer O'Brien (Canandaigua, N.Y./ Canandaigua) added 3 digs, and Kierstin Comerford (Geneva, N.Y./ Geneva) finished with 1 kill and 1 dig. 

In the recent NJCAA Division III women's volleyball national rankings, the Lakers jumped up to the #13 spot, one spot below NJCAA Region III opponent SUNY Jefferson who the Lakers have defeated three times this season. The Lakers are back home on the Putt Moore Court this Thursday, October 13th at 6 PM for the final home game of the season. The team will also be celebrating their three Sophomores for Sophomore Day.
