11 Lakers Earn Academic All-Region III Distinction

11 Finger Lakes Student-Athletes were recognized for thier achievements on and off the field this past week as they were named to the 2013-14 Academic All-Region III Team. Among the Finger Lakes teams, Women's Basketball led the way with four athletes earning the distinction. 

Alexis Maiorano (Women's Basketball - 3.96) Alexis Maiorano had a strong season in the classroom and on the basketball court. This is the second year in a row that she has posted the highest GPA of any Finger Lakes Student-Athlete. She started 25 of 26 games for the Lakers. One of her highlights this season was hitting a game-tying three pointer with six seconds left to force overtime at home against Tompkins Cortland. The Lakers would go on to win the game in double overtime.

Kelly Broderick (Women's Basketball - 3.90) Broderick, along with Maiorano and Dean, was one of the sophomore team leaders relyed upon by Head Coach Bill Henry during the 2013-14 season. Kelly had one of the top shooting seasons in school history. She made 42 three pointers, which ranks her 6th on the Finger Lakes All-Time list.

Casey Dean (Women's Basketball - 3.57) Casey Dean recorded three double-doubles for the Lakers this past season. She started every game for Finger Lakes and led the team in rebounding.

Taylor Guerin (Women's Basketball - 3.60) Taylor appeared in every game for Finger Lakes and added a spark off of the bench. She netted a career-high eight points against nationally ranked Jefferson Community College this past season. Guerin was able to maintain a 3.60 GPA while balancing basketball and her studies as a nursing major.

Kevin Carpentier (Baseball - 3.57) Kevin continued to post one of the best GPAs on the baseball team this year. He went 2-0 on the mound for the Lakers and struck out 15 in just 11 innings of work. Carpentier also hit for Finger Lakes this year and recorded four doubles.

Joseph LaCourt (Cross Country - 3.60) LaCourt recorded a top 20 finish at the season opening meet for the Lakers. He led all cross country runners with his 3.60 GPA.

Brandon Smith (Cross Country - 3.54) Smith turned in his two best performances of the season in the final two meets for the Lakers. He set a new best time when he finished 34th at the Region III Championship and bested his time at the NJCAA National Championship.

AJ Carselli (Men's Soccer - 3.64) Carselli scored a goal and recorded three assists for the Lakers from his midfield position. He led all soccer players in GPA this past year. Carselli was a National Honor Society student at Victor HS and continued his academic sucess at Finger Lakes as he majors in Business Administration. 

Rachel Mertens (Softball - 3.73) Rachel Mertens will go down as one of the best pitchers in Finger Lakes history. She graduated this year as the career leader in wins and strikeouts. Mertens was a two-time All-MSAC performer and led the softball team in GPA this season.

Sean Pebbles (Track and Field - 3.61) Sean Pebbles adds this academic distinction to the honors he has already earned during the 2014 Track and Field season. The freshman from Wayland-Cohocton was the Region III Champion in the Javelin and finished as runner-up at the NJCAA National Championship, where he broke his own school record. His runner-up finish at the NJCAAs earned him All-American distinction.

Cassidie Smith (Track and Field - 3.89) Smith earned one of the highest GPAs of any student-athlete at Finger Lakes this past season. She recorded the top Javelin throw of any Laker this season and recorded top 10 finishes at the Region III Championships in the Shot Put, Discus, and Javelin.

To be eligible for Region III Academic accolades, a student-athlete must possess a minimum 3.50 grade point average, and have successfully completed at least 45 credit hours.
